I Hate Your HDR

WaPo’s director of photography attempts to justify the paper’s use of HDR on the front page.

We don’t think HDR is unethical, just aesthetically painful.

Ha.  Wait, so you actually have a tumblr dedicated to “bad” (and I use the term loosely, because I’m not an expert on photography nor do I CLAIM to be) HDR shots, and you make an honest effort to scope out people who don’t claim pursued interest in it (see above), so you can criticize them.  I stumbled across this picture after googling HDR shots because the subject piqued my interest for a good fifteen minutes.  I didn’t expect, nor did I ask for your opinion, which by looking at your entire tumblr, would be completely biased and negative either way.
Because of the fact that I’ve never even heard of you, and you had to actually search for me just so you can have your “HAR HAR HAR I’m a pompous ass” moment on your tumblr makes my soul weep.  Not out of self-interest, but out of pity.  I hope that you find a more productive hobby than mindlessly searching the internet to find “bad” (again.. I hardly know what HDR is.) shots to throw on your blog like you’re some renown connoisseur of the arts.  Get over the hump that is your ego, and do something that would benefit someone.
I would MAYBE SOMEWHAT understand if my tumblr was a PHOTOGRAPHY tumblr where I set out to show off my OWN works.  Where I posted this photo as my OWN.  Sure, I appreciate photography.  But only in the sense that you probably “appreciated” your father’s love and acception because the idea was so rare and foreign to you after the cops hauled him off for kissing your mother with his fist.  I have other hobbies and interests.  Photography is not one of them.  Like I said, I can appreciate other people’s photography, but I wasn’t blessed with the artistic eye needed to take it up myself.
I would appreciate it if you don’t reblog me out of context purely for laughs and to feed your ever-growing ego.  In fact, I may just dedicate this entirely tumblr to HDR shots, since they make your soul weep so much.  I think your weeping soul has piqued my interest far more than HDR shots have.

We hate most HDR, but we love you!

HDR (High Dynamic Range) photo editing is absolutely amazing.
Apparently, it’s a feature in Photoshop CS2 that let’s you merge a bunch of exposures of one shot into one picture.  That way, nothing’s underexposed or overexposed.  Let’s say you get a shot of a city layout like above, and you take.. 5 shots or so at different lighting.  One shot has the street and darker colors more exposed.  One shot has the city and the bright lights and sky more exposed.  Put them together, and you have an amazing looking photograph.. which.. really stretches the meaning of the word “editing” in photo editing.  In fact, all you’re really doing is bringing out the best of what’s already there.
Look up this stuff and this technique.  Makes me wish I had a few hundred to blow out on a fancy camera and talent.  An eye for these things wouldn’t hurt either, but I’m pretty sure our generation is fresh out of those.

No comment. Except for, you know, this makes my soul weep.
